Do you agree with Isaacson about our overuse of the term "genius"? How is genius defined? Can you think of someone, in either today's world or in history, who would qualify for genius?ģ. How would you describe Leonardo da Vinci as presented by Walter Isaacson in this biography? Does the author do an adequate job of making da Vinci accessible to 21st-century readers? Does he bring him to life as a living, breathing human being?Ģ. It’s entertaining it has a fast pace, a great plot, plenty of action and tech-based problem solving. Can she figure out what’s going on and turn this into a victory somehow? However, Lanvik and his bodyguard turn up dead, and Jazz is next on the killer’s list. She gets caught, but talks her way out of trouble for the time being. She accepts his offer, and the sabotage effort is nearly successful. She is approached by local businessman Trond Landvik, who offers her a huge sum to sabotage Sanchez Aluminum’s harvesting equipment so he can buy the company. Jazz is smart and capable, but because of poor life choices, she has ended up working as a low-paid porter and supplements her income with a sideline of smuggling. Jasmine Bashara is the daughter of a master welder and lives in Artemis, the moon city. Artemis won the 2018 Dragon Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. It was published by Broadway Books on Novemand runs 352 pages. I’m going to pronounce this novel hard science fiction. But Sandel is best at what he calls bringing ‘moral clarity to the alternatives we confront as democratic citizens ’…. “Michael Sandel, perhaps the most prominent college professor in America…practices the best kind of academic populism, managing to simplify John Stuart Mill and John Rawls without being simplistic. He is calling for nothing less than a reinvigoration of citizenship.” (Samuel Moyn, The Nation) For Michael Sandel, justice is not a spectator sport…. Erudite, conversational and deeply humane, this is truly transformative reading.” ( Publishers Weekly, starred review) “Sandel dazzles in this sweeping survey of hot topics…. In terms we can all understand, ‘Justice’ confronts us with the concepts that lurk, so often unacknowledged, beneath our conflicts.” (Jonathan Rauch, New York Times) “Sandel explains theories of justice…with clarity and immediacy the ideas of Aristotle, Jeremy Bentham, Immanuel Kant, John Stuart Mill, Robert Nozick and John Rawls have rarely, if ever, been set out as accessibly…. "More than exhilarating exciting in its ability to persuade this student/reader, time and again, that the principle now being invoked-on this page, in this chapter-is the one to deliver the sufficiently inclusive guide to the making of a decent life." (Vivian Gornick, Boston Review) 5/11/2023 0 Comments Austenland book 2Fun fact, I reviewed the sequel to this novel way back in 2015: Midnight in Austenland. They don’t get all the characters quite right (like Martin) and make it all quite sexually charged where the novel is more focused on Jane’s Austen obsession and her more realistic experience in an Austen inspired story. If you’ve seen the movie adaptation of this novel, I would say I enjoy the book quite a bit more.I relate quite a bit to our main character, Jane.
This was hauntingly similar to what I experienced with some of our more recent political turmoil. Probing the torrid political climate in the lead-up to World War II and the ways that seemingly sensible people can be sucked into radical action, The Mitford Affair follows Nancy's valiant efforts to stop the Nazis from taking over Great Britain, and the complicated choices she must make between the personal and the political. 'The Mitford Affair' probably piqued my interest more than the others with the dilemma it poses when a family finds itself in the midst of social upheaval with family members landing on differing sides of the situation. When she overhears alarming conversations and uncovers disquieting documents, Nancy must make excruciating choices as Great Britain goes to war with Germany. Though they've weathered scandals before, the family falls into disarray when Diana divorces her wealthy husband to marry a fascist leader and Unity follows her sister's lead all the way to Munich, inciting rumors that she's become Hitler's mistress.Īs the Nazis rise in power, novelist Nancy Mitford grows suspicious of her sisters' constant visits to Germany and the high-ranking fascist company they keep. "Plunges readers into a world of glamorous, charismatic young British debutantes and then turns that shiny world on its head.the most delicious storytelling." -Allison Pataki, New York Times bestselling author of The Magnificent Lives of Marjorie Postįrom New York Times bestselling author Marie Benedict comes an explosive novel of history's most notorious sisters, one of whom will have to choose: her country or her family?īetween the World Wars, the six Mitford sisters-each more beautiful, brilliant, and eccentric than the next-dominate the English political, literary, and social scenes. 5/11/2023 0 Comments Kings rising by cs pacatLaurent and Damen need each other politically as they try to meld their armies to take back both Vere and Akielos, but the demands of war and politics complicate their personal relationship. This is the essential plot of this book. Camilla Isley has outdone herself with this novel and I couldn't be more pleased with how it all turned out. This is one of the most unique books that I have read in a long time. The ending to this was pretty happy, and I was satisfied with the way things ended. It was enjoyable to see these two different futures unfold, and I liked the mystery of who Gemma would end up with in the end, and whether the two futures would somehow merge. In one life she went and stopped her ex’s wedding and told him how she felt, and in the other she went to her friend’s wedding instead. The storyline in this followed Gemma as her life went down two different paths after one life-altering situation. It was also nice how much she cared about her friend, that she’d sacrifice her own happiness to help her. Gemma was an okay character, and it was clear how deep her feelings were for Jake. This was an adult contemporary romance novel, following one woman as her life went in two different directions. “When I discovered you were getting married, my world collapsed.” (Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. 5/11/2023 0 Comments The Hunted Queen by Jagger ColeThe rabbit shouldn’t crave the wolf’s sharp teeth.
